Does variation in serum LDL-cholesterol response to dietary fatty acids help explain the controversy over fat quality and cardiovascular disease risk?

چکیده

Controversy over fat quality and cardiovascular disease risk stems from a series of meta-analyses prospective cohort randomised intervention trials, which found little evidence for significant relationship between the intake saturated endpoints. Possible explanations these null findings include difficulties inherent in estimating true food intake, confounding effects macronutrient replacement composition, marked inter-individual variation response serum LDL-cholesterol. The aim this narrative review was to present existence origins LDL-cholesterol dietary fat, its potential explain controversy latter. provides suggest that LDL-responsiveness may harbour confound atherosclerotic risk, thus undermining effectiveness guideline replace with unsaturated fat. It concludes identification application simple biomarker phenomenon, would make it possible tailor guidelines LDL responsive individuals, who stand gain greater benefit their health.

Dietary Fatty acids and cardiovascular health - an ongoing controversy.

In this discussion it is important to realize that it is not recommended to avoid all saturated fatty acids from the diet. That is not the debate. The debate centers around at least two important issues: (1) is the intake of saturated fatty acids causally related to cardiovascular disease and (2) are all saturated fatty acids equal? This discussion is fed by findings from a recent metaanalysis ...

Dietary effects on cardiovascular disease risk factors: beyond saturated fatty acids and cholesterol.

Hypercholesterolemia represents a significant risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). While diet intervention remains the initial choice for the prevention and treatment of CVD, the nature of the dietary modification remains controversial. For example, reducing calories from total fat, without decreasing saturated fat intake results in insignificant changes in low density lipoprotein cholesterol...

Dietary fatty acids and cardiovascular disease.

In 1991, the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy produced a report on the dietary reference values for food energy and nutrients for groups of people in the United Kingdom. The resulting recommendations, which included specific limits for intakes of total, saturated, trans- and cis-polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have remained a cornerstone of public health policy ever since, and sim...

Saturated Fatty Acids and Cardiovascular Disease: Replacements for Saturated Fat to Reduce Cardiovascular Risk

Dietary recommendations to decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) have focused on reducing intake of saturated fatty acids (SFA) for more than 50 years. While the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans advise substituting both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids for SFA, evidence supports other nutrient substitutions that will also reduce CVD risk. For example, replac...

Dietary fat and cholesterol and risk of cardiovascular disease in older adults: the Health ABC Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Although dietary fats and cholesterol have previously been associated with risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in middle-aged populations, less is known among older adults. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between dietary fats, cholesterol, and eggs and CVD risk among community-dwelling adults aged 70-79 in the Health, Aging and Body Composition St...
